The finger rhizomes are about one to two inches (1-2 inches) long and have at least two viable eyes (buds from which a plant will grow).

The crown rhizomes are shaped differently than the fingers (cone shaped), have at least one developed eye, and produce just the same as fingers, if not better.

With its beautiful white flower, turmeric is easy to grow anywhere the ground doesn’t freeze, and elsewhere it does well in containers and can be stored in a cool place for the winter.

Here in zone 8 it dies back in winter and returns in spring from the rhizomes which survive in the ground. They will over winter with mulch to zone 7 but die back in winter and return from the rhizomes in spring. but mine are climatized to grow here and do fine. It multiplies well with little care.

Plant twice the depth of the root in well-draining soil. It is a tropical plant and loves sunlight and warmth.

How to Plant

Dig a hole and put it into the hole and cover it with soil and put some water on it. It needs sometime to grow it.

The plant grows well partial sun and does need plenty of water. The plant likes loose soil. The plant may be dying on first frost day but will re-grow in the spring. Therefore, when you harvest, keep one or two rhizome in pot or ground for next year.
